Investigation of the ytterbium reduction process in the synthesis of Al – Yb master alloys for the modification of aluminum alloys

This work investigates the synthesis process and characterization of a novel type aluminum-ytterbium master alloy in molten salts. The significance obtained results for research conducted field so far is due to previously proven effectiveness influence ytterbium on structure properties aluminum alloys. During experimental work, thermodynamic analysis aluminothermic fluoride reduction from salts was performed revealed that might occur develop presence sodium potassium chloride if NaYbF4 precursor formed. Subsequently, temperature intervals thermal effects during its (NaF – KCl) by were determined as result analysis. Al Yb alloys experiments, maximal value extraction 82.5% achieved changing parameters, such temperature, reaction time, salts/aluminium ratios. Besides, containing 1.1 5.1 wt.% synthesized using optimized technological conditions examined with metallographic microstructure presented eutectic colonies + Al3Yb composition located along boundaries α-Al dendritic cells.
